Returning to normal…
Last summer I had great plans to get out and photograph a number of waterfalls around the UK but alas the covid pandemic put a stop to all those plans. Now with the introduction of the Government’s Roadmap and the general easing of covid restrictions it has at long last been possible to start getting out and about once more. However, with us all being asked to continue to minimise our travel for the timebeing I’ve restricted my movements to the locations I can easily reach on the Norfolk Coast and some walks along the River Little Ouse from Santon Downham where the normal activity of Spring has begun.
In the coming weeks I have trips planned to the Peak District which will be followed by a few days on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. Ironically, I was staying near Corfe Castle near to the iconic locations of Harry’s Rocks, Kimmeridge Bay, Durdle Door and Portland Bill when last March the pandemic first struck forcing a hasty retreat home - it will be great to go back and I look forward to posting some details about my trips in the coming weeks and months…!
Photographing waterfalls
Waterfall Country is the name given to an area around the head of the Vale of Neath in South Wales where an unusually large number of publicly accessible waterfalls are located. I travelled there is February 2017 the day before Storm Doris struck the UK bringing torrential rain and winds that reached 94 mph to the Brecon Beacons where I was staying. Undeterred I managed to get a few half-decent photographs of Henrhyd and Sgwd Ddwli Falls that made me determined to make a return visit in the hope of experiencing better conditions.
Fast forward to January 2020 and I booked a two week trip to Wales, The first week was to be spent in the Brecon Beacons so I could revisit the Waterfall Country and the second week would see me staying at Beddgelert in North Wales hoping to photograph besides the beautiful landscape of Snowdonia two other photogenic waterfalls I particularly wanted to visit – Swallow Falls near Betws-y-Coed and Aber Falls which is located about two miles south of the village of Abergwyngregyn.
By March coronavirus arrived and along with everyone else I have been in lockdown for most of the time since – my eagerly anticipated trip was cancelled and currently I am not planning to be in Wales before next Spring – if all goes well...!
RSPB Reserve at Bempton Cliffs…
With lockdown restrictions easing I took the opportunity to visit the RSPB Reserve at Bempton Cliffs last Thursday along with two fellow photographers. A trip to Bempton would normally last at least two days with an overnight stay in a local pub but not this time. Setting off from Norfolk around 06:00am we drove on the top of the Wolds to the Humber Bridge and onward past Beverly and Bridlington before arriving in the area around 10:00am. With the car park already full due to good weather and restricted available spaces due to Covid-19 we parked at nearby Flamborough Head and walked the heritage coastal path to Bempton Cliffs. A long and arduous walk with camera bags and tripods but well worth the effort. After a day of photography and exploring the coast (including some long exposure shots at Thornwick Bay) we set off back to Norfolk around 07:00pm. A long but rewarding day…!
Welcome to my new website…
When travelling I have often been asked by other photographers that I have met if I have a website that they can visit to view more of my work. With the restrictions imposed upon everyone due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic I decided this would be a great photography project for me to undertake. So here it is - my own website that hopefully visitors to my site will find interesting and which I also hope will enable me to share both my photographs and passion for photography with family, friends and other like-minded people.
I intend to use this Blog section of the website to talk about my recent exploits with my camera and also to go into a little bit more detail about the location and/or shoot and to explain how the images were captured. In addition, I shall use the blog to share other news and stories about photography from photographers who have inspired me. I shall try and write something at least two or three times a month. If you want to comment upon anything that I write please feel free to send me a message…!
